Converting the immense interest shown in
Australia to tourism sales was not possible without support from UK
travel retailers.
The Special Agents scheme asked retailers for £500 for membership.
For this they would receive:
• a 3-day intensive instruction course on Australia.
• opportunities to Visit Australia.
• introductions to the Australian Incoming Tourism Industry.

• Signage.
• their names published in the Travellers Guide sent to all
respondents from the advertising.
The scheme was so successful that a major retailing group threatened
legal proceedings on the basis it gave unfair advantage to rival travel
agents!
The scheme also caught the imagination of the Association of British
